My Stepmom Died And That’s Not Okay

I’ve been having some health problems.

In order to resolve them, I did what any good adult would do: I went to the doctor. It turns out, I’m stressed. I’m stressed in the kind of way that makes your eye twitch for no apparent reason and makes you cry when you drop your fork on the ground (it had one last bite of broccoli on it, okay?).

My doctor asked me about my life and what I have experienced in the last year. I droned on about my engagement (yay!), moving to a new city, planning a wedding, financial troubles, health problems, and the passing of my stepmother.

“You said your mother-in-law died?”

“No, my stepmom.”

“Oh. I was about to say…that is awful! Not that losing your stepmother isn’t awful, but…”

My stepmom passed away seven months ago. This is not the first time I have experienced a less-than-sympathetic reaction. This is not the first time I have had to stifle my tears and reciprocate a stranger’s words with a forced smile. Our society has an innate bias towards the word stepmother.

I blame Cinderella. Thanks, Disney.

I have to be honest here: we bickered a lot. She was stubborn. I was stubborn. We fought, but that doesn’t mean that I didn’t love her. It doesn’t mean that it hurt any less when my father called me on that otherwise beautiful Thursday morning and told me she was gone. It doesn’t mean that I didn’t have to dig deeper than I ever thought possible, to find strength I didn’t know I had, to organize a funeral and finalize all of the details so my dad didn’t have to.

I haven’t fully mourned her loss yet. I don’t know if I have it in me to. She has been in my life since I was a tiny human running around with my blanket and sucking my thumb. With my wedding less than two months away, it’s finally starting to hit me that she wont be present. There are certain things that have always meant more to me when she would say them. Hearing her tell me that I’m beautiful has always been one of them. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because you expect your biological parents to tell you you’re beautiful. Maybe it means something different when it comes from a “step.” Knowing that I wont hear those words from her on that day stings. It stings the way a stranger’s words sting when they assume I’m fine because I only lost a stepparent. I was only her stepdaughter.

The loss of a stepparent is confusing. Sometimes I feel guilty. Sometimes I feel angry. Sometimes I feel like I shouldn’t be allowed to feel sad because she wasn’t actually my mom. Sometimes I feel like I’m betraying my actual mom by feeling sad.

And, what may be the worst of all feelings, sometimes I feel like I don’t get to feel sad because at times we simply didn’t get along.

I know I’m not the only one who has experienced (or is experiencing) something similar. I know I’m not the only stepchild who has experienced this kind of a loss. I want to change the narrative. I want people to understand the complex range of emotions that can accompany the death of a stepparent when both biological parents are still very active in a child’s (or adult’s) life.

I am blessed. I have an amazing mom and I have a phenomenal dad. I also have a kick-ass stepfather whom I love dearly. Just because I have all of these things, that doesn’t mean that my stepmother’s death should be diluted. I am not deserving of less time to grieve or less time to process what happened simply because my bio parents are amazing.

What I am deserving of is a little bit of compassion.

It has been seven months.

And I think I have finally started to grieve.

This post is part of Common Grief, a Healthy Living editorial initiative. Grief is an inevitable part of life, but that doesn’t make navigating it any easier. The deep sorrow that accompanies the death of a loved one, the end of a marriage or even moving far away from home, is real. But while grief is universal, we all grieve differently. So we started Common Grief to help learn from each other. Let’s talk about living with loss. If you have a story you’d like to share, email us at strongertogether@huffingtonpost.com.

‘Love Hormone’ Oxytocin May Enhance Feelings Of Spirituality

The same hormone that helps mothers bond with their newborns may also enhance feelings of spirituality, a new study suggests.

It’s been called the “love hormone” and the “cuddle chemical,” but doctors and scientists know it as oxytocin, a hormone secreted by the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland during times of love and bonding.

A recent study spearheaded by Duke University social psychologist Patty Van Cappellen found that participants who received doses of oxytocin reported a greater sense of spirituality than those who received a placebo.

“Oxytocin appears to be part of the way our bodies support spiritual beliefs,” Van Cappellen said in a statement.

For research purposes, the study defined spirituality as a sense of connection to a higher power or to the world that gives meaning to people’s lives.

Eighty-three men between the ages of 35 to 64 participated in the study. Each participant received either a dose of oxytocin or a placebo, administered through a nasal spray.

Researchers found that those who received oxytocin were more likely to report feeling that spirituality was important in their lives and that life has meaning and purpose. They were also more likely to give higher ratings to statements like, “All life is interconnected” and “There is a higher plane of consciousness or spirituality that binds all people.”

Participants also listened to a guided meditation, after which those who received oxytocin reported experiencing more positive emotions like awe, gratitude, hope, inspiration, interest, love and serenity than those who received a placebo.

The study’s results held true regardless of whether the participant reported belonging to an organized religion or not, and they remained consistent a week after the hormone and placebo were administered.

Van Cappellen noted that the results of the study could only be applied to men given that the research subjects were all males. Oxytocin produces slightly different results in men and women, she said, and thus further studies should investigate the hormone’s role on women’s spirituality.

Even among men, the effect might not be uniform. The study also showed that oxytocin has a stronger spiritual effect on people with a particular variant of the CD38 gene, which regulates the release of oxytocin from hypothalamic neurons in the brain.

“Spirituality is complex and affected by many factors,” Van Cappellen said. “However, oxytocin does seem to affect how we perceive the world and what we believe.”

But Van Cappellen isn’t alone in her findings. Previous studies have shown oxytocin to have a profound impact on spirituality, as well as generosity, altruism, and empathy. Oxytocin has also been shown to play a role in experiences of spiritual transformation.

But it has a dark side, too.

A 2010 study of Dutch males out of the University of Amsterdam found that male subjects who received a dose of oxytocin were more likely to express ethnocentric prejudice and xenophobia than those who received a placebo.

Luckily, spirituality isn’t bound by hormones alone. It’s how we choose to define our spirituality ― whether as a connection to all creation on our global home or loyalty only to those who look, act and believe as we do ― that makes all the difference.

Mel Brooks Jokingly Tried To Pull Down President Obama’s Pants

Mel Brooks just can’t resist the opportunity for a prank.

The comic legend drew big laughs as he pretended to pull down President Barack Obama’s pants at a White House ceremony on Thursday.

The moment came in the East Room just after the president placed the National Medal of Arts around the 90-year old writer, actor, producer and director’s neck:

That wasn’t the only distinctly Brooks-ian moment of the event.

Prior to the ceremony, the United States Marine Corps Band treated the audience to “Springtime For Hitler,” the tune at the heart of Brooks’ “The Producers.”

Brooks was among 23 honored with medals for arts and humanities. USA Today has the complete list of honorees.

Jew Am I?

2016-09-22-1474519476-6095897-ScreenShot20160921at9.44.03PM.png

Despite my unpronounceable surname, formidable Dukakis-level brow line and decidedly Jewtastic seasonal allergies, I’ve always considered myself a regular, average American. I’ve lived in America for all 50 of my 50 years, if we count Los Angeles as part of America. And some people do. On Friday nights, I solve Blue Bloods murders right alongside Tom Selleck’s mustache. On Saturday mornings, I’ll watch any college football game you place in front of me, even the traditional battle between the Devry Institute and Clown College. And on the 4th of July, I not only root for Joey Chestnutt in the Hot Dog Eating contest, but I’ll often eat along with him. You know, for moral support. I like my sitcoms with three cameras and my omelettes with three cheeses. I cried at Argo, Sully, Rudy and Miracle. I complain about traffic and Mondays and my back and gridlock in Washington. See? Regular. Average. American.

And then there are occasional days, when I still feel like a guest, trying to “pass”. But hey, what are you gonna do?

Not long ago, I was at the dentist when their hygienist asked if I was Persian. I answered “No, but that’s funny I do get that a lot. My grandparents were Sephardic. From Turkey.” Apparently, I had given the wrong answer. Apparently, I had given the most grievous answer known to man. Turns out my hygienist wasn’t Persian, but Armenian. And she spent the next ten minutes holding me a little too responsible for the Armenian Genocide, while never once removing her finger from my mouth. “I guess maybe there’s such a thing as a good Turk” she offered with all the resolute conviction of someone reading a ransom note with an off-camera Glock pointed at her head. She then made repeated references to “your people.” My grandparents moved here a hundred years ago. My people are from Encino. As I’ve been known to say, the only things they committed genocide against are pound cake and my self-esteem.

I can’t say I grew up in a super Jewish home. We were Reform. So reform that our temple had a swimming pool, hence it’s common appellation as the “shul with a pool.” I went to Nursery and Hebrew School there and had my bar mitzvah there, but we were mostly High Holiday kind of Jews. And even then, those services were frequently held in a Presbyterian Church. I did mention this was LA, didn’t I?

The other thing that muddled my Jewish identity was the fact that I was half-Sephardic (from Turkey) and half-Ashkenazi (from Poland and Austria). I always thought of my parents as just two Valley Jews. Their nearly matching tennis gear didn’t belie some cultural chasm to my ten year-old eye. But apparently, their union had been the Judeo equivalent of an inter-marriage. I never really considered that there was much difference between my grandparents. But looking back, one side, the Bel Air side, were close friends with Richard Nixon. On the other side, the Fairfax side, I had a grandmother so old country that she didn’t drive, pronounced Seattle as “Seatt-Lee” and wouldn’t buy me root beer because a kid shouldn’t drink alcohol. And a grandfather who, I swear, had at least 8 brothers named “Victor.”

I went to a public elementary school that was so Jewish, I didn’t even realize anyone there was Jewish. I just thought all guys were as bad as me at contact sports. And all girls had frizzy hair and topped out at 5’2.

My first real understanding that not everyone celebrated Shavuot, came when I entered my Episcopalian middle school. Some of the clues included boys with blond hair, Topsiders, restricted counry clubs, tee times and a group called the Sons of Hitler that drew swastikas on our lockers. I don’t believe they received course credit for their hard work. But they didn’t receive suspensions either. This was back in the day, when “kike” was tossed around as casually and without consequence as “fag.” And if you happened to be a sensitive Jew, you frequently received the daily double.

I always felt I was a guest at someone else’s school. But by the end of my six years, I started to have fun with it. I was tasked with doing the introductions at our annual debate banquet, where I shared the dais with our school priest and English headmaster. Neither looked particularly overjoyed when I began my comments with “seated on the bima tonight” and then introduced each member of the debate team by their synagogue affiliation. Except for the one Korean guy every debate team had. He, I said, was here representing Fromin’s Delicatessen.

2016-09-22-1474519803-4968074-ScreenShot20160921at9.49.22PM.png

In college in the Northeast, I definitely went through a phase where I did everything I could to pass. Not just as Gentile, but as Mayflower, old money Gentile. I had the Bean Bluchers and the Norwegian fisherman’s sweater and the shiksa girlfriend from Miss Porter’s. I played touch football with fraternity brothers overlooking the water in Newport while wearing an Oxford shirt. But this was always an ill-fitting costume. As they say, you can’t hide the hook. That’s my nose. That’s what the hook is referring to.
I even once tried dying my hair blond, using a homemade brew of lemon juice, Sun-In and peroxide. Instead of blond, I spent a summer with a bright orange mane looking like the evil spawn of Danny Bonaduce, Carrot Top and Bozo the Clown.

In reality, it’s hard to pass as a Jamestown colonist or a laconic Wyoming sheriff with the last name “Behar.” My wife and I used to joke that if our kids ever wanted to run for the Senate, they could drop the “Behar” and run as “Samantha Robins” or “Jack Andrews.” The latter could also save the State Department from an impending terrorist attack in a Michael Bay movie. Then again, this now feels like a concern from a bygone era. Things have changed so quickly in this country that no name feels more quintessentially American than “Barack Hussein Obama.”

As an adult, I’ve embraced my Jewishness if not a deep religiosity. Both my kids attend Jewish day school, yet I’ve never been to Israel. “But who’s watching my trees” I ask every time to repeated non-laughter. I call 1000 Island , “Russian dressing” and still see Woody Allen movies mostly out of cultural obligation. I know the V’ahavta by heart (or off-book as I call it). But then again, I still also know the Lord’s Prayer–the gift of Tuesday Episcopal chapel that keeps on giving.

We consider ourselves a typical American family. Our last big trip was to Charleston. Before that, we went to Austin. Super American, right? But then, after a week of eating our way through Texas and still in a brisket coma, I was pulled out of line at the Austin airport for questioning. For no discernible reason, beyond my swarthy complexion and swarthy outlook.

It’s possible I’m getting more Jewish as I age. Or the corollary, all old people seem Jewish. Last week, I smuggled a baggy of Trader Joe’s lox into my local bagel store so I wouldn’t have to pay full retail. When did I become everyone’s grandmother?

So what is the point of all this identity navel-gazing. Two thoughts come to mind. The first is about the Jewish-American experience. And how not everyone’s is the same. We’ve grown accustomed to seeing 20th century Jewry through the same herring-tinted filter. It’s always Ashknazi. It always runs through Brooklyn. And it always seems to be narrated by the same talking heads. We get it, Larry King liked egg creams, stickball and sneaking into Ebbets Field. But my experience has just as many bumuelas and biscochos as tongue sandwiches on rye. And my experience has already been supplanted by the new Jewish immigrant stories from Iran, South Africa, Russia and Israel.

My second observation is how I/we fit into the overall tapestry of American life. Every immigrant in every group always faces the give and take of full assimilation versus holding on to precious customs. There are days when I’m well aware that I am a Jew in a non-Jewish society. Try spending a day at Disneyland. (It’s also helpful if you want to feel anorexic). But on most days, I just blend in and don’t think about it–a proposition I’m well aware not all groups get to achieve with equal ease. But as I write this final paragraph in the Northridge Starbucks, the only non-Asian or Latino in the room, I see that we all just want to be thought of as American.

This Teen Is Almost 8 Feet Tall — And Still Growing

At 7 feet 8 inches, Broc Brown definitely sticks out in a crowd, and he’s only going to get bigger.

Brown’s family knew something was up at a young age: He was 5-foot-2 in kindergarten, according to his mother, Darci Elliot.

“When he got into middle school he was around 6 feet tall, and by high school he was 7 feet tall,” Elliot told Barcroft TV. “It’s a genetic disorder and there’s nothing that can stop him from growing – I don’t know if he will ever stop.”

Brown, 19, grows an astounding six inches a year because of a rare genetic disorder called Sotos syndrome, or cerebral gigantism. The condition reportedly affects 1 in 14,000 newborns, but the National Institutes of Health says the number may be closer to 1 in 5,000, since not everyone who has it is properly diagnosed.

Kids with the syndrome tend to grow quickly in younger years and have unusually large heads, but their adult height is often in the normal range. That makes Brown a rarity among rarities.

Other symptoms include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and an explosive temper.

Brown has both, his mother said.

“When he gets mad, he’s mad. It wouldn’t take him two seconds to pop a hole in the wall ― it could be very dangerous if he wasn’t on medication and able to be calmed,” Elliot told Barcroft TV. “But overall, he is a big softie, his heart is as big as his body.”

Brown is in constant pain because of other issues, including curvature of the spine and narrowing of the spinal cord. He was born with only one kidney, which means he can’t take painkillers.

“It kind of feels like a big tennis racket has gone through my back,” he told Barcroft.

Dr. John Pappas, director of NYU Clinical Genetic Services and associate professor of pediatrics at NYU Langone Medical Center, said there is no cure for Sotos syndrome and treatments address only the symptoms, not the cause.

“We don’t have a specific kind of medication that can control the overgrowth of protein,” Pappas told HuffPost.

Pappas, who hasn’t treated Brown, said factors beyond Sotos syndrome may be causing Brown’s non-stop growth.

The teen’s trajectory has been financially challenging for his family.

“There’s a lot of things that are hard, like finding shoes for him, finding clothes,” Elliot told local station WILX-TV in 2013. Nike helped by donating a pair of size 24 shoes.

Brown’s size has helped him reach a certain height of fame.

Previously, he held the Guinness World Record for tallest male under the age of 18. He outgrew that honor when he reached legal age. Kevin Bradford of Doral, Florida, who stands 7-feet-1, now holds that honor.

But if Brown continues to grow, he could soon be looking down at 8-foot-3 Sultan Kösen, the current owner of the tallest living person honor. Kösen stopped growing in 2012 at the tender age of 29.

Brown doesn’t seem concerned about being the world’s tallest man. He’d be happy with a normal, comfortable existence.

“I hopefully want to work for a sporting goods store or something like that, a cashier or something,” he said. “I just want to have my own job.”

USA Today Columnist Urges Motorists To ‘Run Down’ Protesters On North Carolina Highway

Conservative USA Today columnist and University of Tennessee law professor Glenn Reynolds caused an uproar on Twitter when he urged motorists to drive over protesters blocking a highway in North Carolina.

Run them down,” Reynolds, who also produces the Instapundit website, tweeted late Wednesday with an image of the protesters on I-277.

Twitter suspended the account, but The Huffington Post preserved a screenshot of the tweet:

His post inspired many on the social media network to suggest that USA Today and the university drop Reynolds:

Demonstrations have taken place throughout the city since the fatal police shooting of Keith Lamont Scott on Tuesday. Police said Scott was armed and refused to drop his gun; witnesses claimed the 43-year-old black man did not have a weapon and was holding a book.

The protests, some of which have turned violent, prompted N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory (R) to declare a state of emergency late Wednesday.

Why Your Environment Is Working Against You—And How To Fix It

This article first appeared on QuietRev.com

Did you know that the way we dress, our facial expressions, our posture, and the tone of our voice make up 93 percent of what we communicate to others?  Research pioneered by Dr. Albert Mehrabian shows that what we communicate non-verbally can be highly impactful. We are hardwired to listen to our senses without conscious thought, and this ability helps protect us from danger and saves us time making endless decisions throughout the day.

If we are so influenced by our senses, what else is subconsciously triggering our everyday decisions?

Lately, I’ve been trying to pay more attention to “nudges” in the built environment around us. The built environment includes the size and shape of our roads, parks, and buildings: these all drive our behavior. Specifically, I’ve been in search of ways the built environment can affect decisions we make about our health. What we see, hear, smell, taste, and feel impacts our actions—and emerging research in urban planning, occupational health, and behavioral science validates this. Here are just a few of the many ways to leverage the built environment to improve health outcomes:

    Nudges to encourage movement

Building location and access to public amenities can impact how much we move. For example, research shows that proximity to parks and other recreational facilities is consistently associated with higher levels of physical activity and healthier weight status among youth and adults. The same goes for proximity to public transit—there is a link between access to public transportation and physical activity since transit use typically involves walking to a bus or subway stop. In one study, train commuters walked an average of 30 percent more steps per day and were four times more likely to walk 10,000 steps per day than car commuters.

Several studies show that simply letting people know the health benefits of taking the stairs and showing their location (like putting a sign in the elevator lobby or using stair banners, like these) increases stair usage by 54 percent. Taking this a bit further, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has a “StairWELL to Better Health”campaign in its headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. They use music, art, an upgraded appearance, and motivational signage to nudge employees to use the stairs more often. (Check out their downloadable signs, and see “before” and “after” images of their stairwells.)

Nudges to encourage healthy eating habits

You may not have heard the term “choice architecture,” but you experience its impact every time you stand next to the candy display at a checkout counter. Choice architecture refers to the different ways in which choices can be presented to consumers and the impact of that presentation on consumer decision making.

For example, the number of choices presented, the manner in which attributes are described, and the presence of a “default” can all influence consumer choice. Many companies are using this strategy by reducing the number of unhealthy foods available in the workplace or by making them harder to find.  ‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬‬

Brian Wansink, director of Cornell University’s Food and Brand Lab and author of Mindless Eating, suggests a number of ways our eating behavior is significantly impacted by the way food is presented to us. For example, in some of his studies, people were 44 percent less likely to snack in kitchens that were tidy versus kitchen environments that were messy.

Keeping the kitchen clean is more than just a sanitation issue—it can affect how much we eat. In another study, Wansink found that people tend to eat less on plates that are 9-10 inches in diameter. People piled up food on larger plates, but felt “deprived” and went for a second helping when eating on smaller plates (around 6 inches in diameter). His other studies show that people are likely to serve themselves 20 percent less food on plates with “contrasting colors” to the food they are eating, e.g., white pasta on a red or blue plate. White breads and pastas on white plates? That is a recipe for “carb-loading”!

Nudges to reduce stress and improve well-being

We have a strong desire to be in and among nature. It’s only natural: for most of human history we spent all our time outdoors. This preference, often referred to biophilia, was introduced and popularized by E.O. Wilson, known as the “father of biodiversity.” Wilson suggests that there is an instinctive bond between human beings and other living systems.

In Biophilic Design: Theory, Science and Practice, authors Stephen R. Kellert, Judith Heerwagen, and Martin Mador describe the importance of nature for human productivity:

“Nature is rife with sensory richness and variety in patterns, textures, light, and colors. All organisms respond with genetically programmed reflexes to the diurnal and seasonal patterns of sunlight and climate.”

Interestingly, biophilia-based design can be manifested in many ways. The most obvious way is to incorporate real plants, water, and natural views into buildings. Another way is to create “natural analogues” or use materials and patterns that evoke nature, such as artwork, ornamentation, biomorphic forms, or the use of natural materials. A third way to use biophilia is through configuration of space, by organizing interior environments or man-made outdoor landscapes, using similar to natural environments elements. In its paper “The Economics of Biophilia,” environmental consulting firm Terrapin Bright Green suggests:

“Over the last quarter century, case studies have documented the advantage of biophilic experience, including improved stress recovery rates, lower blood pressure, improved cognitive functions, enhanced mental stamina and focus, decreased violence and criminal activity, elevated moods and increased learning rates.”

There are hundreds more nudges and design strategies such as these that urban planners, architects, product designers, business owners, and homeowners can use to shape the environment around us to improve health and well-being. In the words of Winston Churchill:

“We shape our buildings; thereafter, our buildings shape us.”

The key is to be aware of how our environment affects us and to use this knowledge for good.

Mark Zuckerberg, Priscilla Chan Pledge Billions To Fight All Disease

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan on Wednesday pledged more than $ 3 billion toward a plan to “cure, prevent or manage all disease within our children’s lifetime.”

Speaking through tears at a San Francisco event to announce the initiative, Chan said she hoped to spare parents the pain she had seen while delivering difficult news as a pediatrician.

“In those moments and in many others we’re at the limit of what we understand about the human body and disease, the science behind medicine, the limit of our ability to alleviate suffering. We want to push back that boundary,” she said.

The event was attended by business and political luminaries including former Microsoft Corp Chairman Bill Gates, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and California Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom.

Zuckerberg said science and the medical community have made rapid advancements over the last 50 years, including eradicating smallpox and nearly eliminating polio without the aid of modern technology.

“Today, just four kinds of diseases cause the majority of deaths,” Zuckerberg added in a posting on his Facebook page, citing cancer, heart disease, infectious diseases and neurological diseases. “We can make progress on all of them with the right technology.”

The plan includes creating a bioscience research center, called the Biohub, developing a chip to diagnose diseases, and ways to monitor the bloodstream continuously and map cell types in the body.

Chan and Zuckerberg will donate $ 600 million over the next decade to the Biohub in San Francisco, bringing together Bay-area researchers and scientists from the University of California at San Francisco, the University of California at Berkeley and Stanford University.

Two initial Biohub projects will be a Cell Atlas, a map of cells controlling the body’s major organs, and the Infectious Disease Initiative to develop new tools, tests, vaccines and strategies for fighting diseases such as HIV, Ebola and Zika.

The Biohub will be led by University of California, San Francisco professor Joseph DeRisi and Stanford University professor Stephen Quake, whose work includes small molecule screening and biological measurements.

Dr. Cori Bargmann, a Rockefeller University neuroscientist, will lead all of Chan Zuckerberg’s science initiatives.

Any research, tools and material coming out of Biohub, which will work with a network of 10 to 15 laboratories across the world, will be “available to every scientist, everywhere,” Bargmann said.

“If you take great people and set them loose on important problems in an intelligent way and give them a long time horizon there will be progress.”

Trevor Noah: Donald Trump Is Just A Bowl Of ‘Poisoned Skittles’

Trevor Noah was confused by Donald Trump Jr.’s recent tweet comparing Syrian refugees to Skittles candies.

“I can’t figure out who should be more offended by this. Syrians? Or Skittles? Or poison? Or bowls? Or analogies?” Noah said on Tuesday night’s broadcast of “The Daily Show.”

Yet, one cruel and thoughtless comparison deserved another, so Noah decided to use the Skittles analogy on Donald Trump himself.

“I don’t understand how we live in a world where people don’t understand that all of [Trump’s] Skittles are poison,” Noah said. “But people latch on to the three that aren’t: He’s an outsider, he’s tough on immigration and he’s not Hillary Clinton.

“All of the other Skittles are poison: His charities are a ripoff, his university was a ripoff and his tax returns are nowhere to be found. How is that not poison?”

7 Things You Need To Know To Tame The Monkey Mind

The monkey mind is something every modern human is familiar with. It’s that incessant thought stream that no matter how hard you try never seems to settle down.

It’s the worries that keep you up at night, the assumptions that cause you grief, the projections you make about the future and the regrets and sentiments you go over from the past.

To tame the monkey mind takes commitment and a deep inner desire for peace. Calming the monkey mind is the first step on the path towards life mastery.

When you consciously realize that your thoughts are energy, and that the energetic implications of what you maintain focus on are actually creating your life to be based in either joy or suffering, you can be empowered to take control over your monkey mind and access the peace of mind that makes sheer existence a true gift.

    1. Seek Common Ground and Connection

Division is a distraction from the divine. When you see yourself as a lone wolf, you lose sight of the pack, and you struggle to survive, let alone thrive. Yet when you can look around and feel a connection to all the people you encounter, everything changes.

You start to focus on connection instead of seeing everything as separate. Nothing is separate. The sun in the sky keeps us all alive. The people around you complaining about their mundane daily disturbances are going through the motions just like you are, they’re merely at a different point in their personal evolution.

Instead of focusing on your independence and feeding your loneliness with divisive thought patterns, bring the focus back to finding common ground.

When you do this you shift your entire perspective.

    2. Look Deeper Than the Story

Society, the people you surround yourself with, your past experiences and your present belief system all work to strengthen the story you’re narrating in your head all day long. It’s so easy to attach to your story and your thoughts are the glue that binds you there.

If you struggle with self-esteem and that’s a part of your story then without a doubt your thoughts are the roots keeping that belief alive.

When you can remain present and focus on how you feel in each moment you can start to release the constant narration and let go of the belief structures embedded in your story that hold you back from realizing your true potential.

    3. Realize YOU Are Not Your Thoughts

Endless thoughts flow through your mind. A thousand thoughts pass through your mind every hour, and you have two options.

The first option is to allow your mind to act like a hose. Thoughts stream in through the top of the funnel and are directed out, they’re let go of, and they flow elsewhere without attachment.

The second option is to allow your mind to act like a filter. Thoughts attempt to pass through the filter but they get trapped. The filter of your mind clings to them for analysis and attachment. The filter gets all clogged up full of thoughts based in what you want and what you don’t want.

When you believe that every thought matters, that every thought that enters your brain is you, and that every thought needs to be examined, you become overburdened, overwhelmed, confused, directionless and prone to overanalyzing. You create internal resistance because you believe on a subconscious level that you are your thoughts.

When you allow your thoughts to show up and pass away without clinging on to them in an attempt to analyze and integrate, you access a freedom that few people embody. You enter into a vibrational state of allowing which is expansive and creates space for you to access the peace and pure joy of being.

    4. Let Go of Excuses

I don’t have time. I’m too busy. These are everyone’s favorite excuses for not allowing connection, acceptance, and peace to enter your life on the level of experience.

When you’re ready to let go of the monkey mind and free yourself from the chains that keep you stuck in your head and separated from the world around you, you stop making excuses.

Breaking down the mental constructs that you’ve been attached to and strengthening for your entire life is no easy task, but it is possible and the more excuses you make, the longer it will take to break away from the mental chatter.

    5. Develop a Drama Free Mentality

There’s a tendency in our society to become addicted to drama. The boldest example of this is television, you flick on the TV and suddenly you’re immersed in a world wrought with drama.

Breaking the cycle of drama will create more peace in your life, thoughts and relationships. Over time you can consciously train your brain to let go of the things you would normally make a big dramatic deal over.

Your life can be whatever you want it to be, a soap opera or a peaceful expansive existence that plays out moment by moment.

    6. Release Judgement

What were they thinking? What’s wrong with them? Why are they doing that?

Judgment creates an inner resistance, a pushing against what is without ever changing what is. When you allow yourself to move into acceptance, even with the things you don’t particularly like, the monkey mind backs down.

The monkey mind thrives on judgment and drama, it’s the fuel that feeds the fire of your thoughts.

When you would normally jump into judgment, whether it’s over someone else’s actions or your own, try to practice allowing things to just be as they are. Allowing isn’t the same as condoning, it’s simply an energetic shift which helps you release attachment and aversion, the monkey mind’s favorite snacks.

    7. Practice Awareness

Practice awareness of the thoughts streaming through your mind. You can’t one day wake up and decide to tame the monkey mind without bringing awareness of the thoughts themselves to the forefront. Awareness is the balm that soothes the irritation the monkey mind loves to create.

Awareness is different from attachment because it integrates with the energy of allowing. Thoughts pass by and your awareness shines a light upon them without the incessant desire to unconsciously attach to their meaning.

In every moment you can bring awareness to the forefront of what you’re feeling and thinking. When you notice anger and irritation bubbling up let yourself become consciously aware of these thoughts and your reaction to them and then just let them go.

5 Body Imbalances You Might Unknowingly Experience

    By: Cassie Shortsleeve

Technology has improved our lives in many ways, but not without some consequences, including these five common bodily aches. Here’s how to address the pain without pulling the plug.

There’s no doubt that technology has its perks, from allowing us to work from all corners of the earth to meditating via an app at the touch of a finger. But despite the many advantages technology brings us every single day, it also has a downside–one that can be very painful if ignored. Americans suffer from a number of ailments relating to technology, including a type of back and shoulder pain that is now often referred to as “tech neck” (the repeated act of craning your neck forward and down over a screen, resulting in discomfort that can lead to strain and stiffness). The solution, however, isn’t to disconnect and revert back to powerless Pilgrim living. Instead, heed this advice from Sonima.com‘s pain and anatomy advisor, Pete Egoscue: “If an activity is hurting us, take a look at the body. Pain is the body’s way of trying to tell us something.”

Related: Understanding the Source of Back Pain

What is your body saying? It could be hinting at an imbalance. Maybe you’re not vertically loaded properly–meaning your head, shoulders, hips, knees, and ankles aren’t stacking up right. Or perhaps you’re just not bearing weight evenly, says Egoscue, creator of the Egoscue Method for pain-free living.

To find out exactly what your body is telling you, tune in. Once you start paying attention to the subtle signals (usually accompanied by a minor ache), stretch or shift positions to continue enjoying your TV, laptop, smartphone or whatever device is captivating your attention in comfort and with peace of body and mind. Use Egoscue’s guide below to help translate your body’s messages and take appropriate action.

When this hurts: BACK, SHOULDERS, HEAD
Your body may be saying…change the way you sit.
Sitting with your shoulders slumped forward, hip flexors shortened, and back rounded can put extra stress on your lower back, which may curve into a ‘C’ shape instead of its natural ‘S’ shape. This pain doesn’t come from only sitting, but also from being misaligned. Your body is compensating, Egoscue says.
Listen and learn: Look down at your feet. You want them hip-width apart facing forward with toes slightly turned in. Your knees will want to come together, but keep them out, he says. Then pull your shoulders down, relax your abs, and roll up and forward with your hips, putting an arch back into your lower back with your pelvis. In this position, he says, you’re vertically loaded. “That’s the way you sit without effort. Your body has just adapted and adjusted to what you have conditioned it to do.” Sit like this and you could notice back and shoulder pain dissipate and even see improvements in issues, like constipation and digestion, he says.

To learn the four other body imbalances that you might unknowingly experience, continue reading the original article on Sonima.com.

Seth Meyers Tears Donald Trump To Shreds Over Birther Issue

“Late Night” host Seth Meyers isn’t letting Donald Trump put the birther issue to bed.

On Friday, the Republican presidential nominee tried to end his many years of falsely claiming that President Barack Obama was not a natural born citizen of the United States by giving a brief statement at the end of a lengthy event where he promoted his newest hotel.

(NOTE: Strong language in the video and below.)

“President Obama was born in the United States, period,” Trump said.

“President Obama was born in the United States, period?” Meyers repeated incredulously. “Fuck you, exclamation point!”

    He added:

“You don’t get to peddle racist rhetoric for five years and decide when it’s over. We decide when it’s over ― and it’s certainly not over after a 30-second statement in the middle of a hotel commercial.”

Meyers then delivered a lengthy takedown of Trump’s years spent feeding the birther conspiracy theory.

“The bottom line is this,” Meyers said. “Trump built his career on a racist lie because he’s a racist and a liar.”

Check it out in the clip above.

3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships

There are so many things we can all do to improve our existing relationships, regardless of their nature. But if we only applied these 3 Basic Choices To Empower Our Relationships, we would certainly make them more fulfilling for all parties involved.

    2016-09-19-1474308214-435847-Couplewithbikes_iStock_70626075_LARGE.jpg

    #1 Choose Loyalty
This of course means being there when it matters. But it also means standing up for the relationship by not getting involved in gossip talks with others, about our lover, friend, sibling or whoever that person may be. The loyalty we show when the person is there to see is powerful, but the one we display to others when that person is not there to witness, can make the relationship bullet proof.

    #2 Choose To Give
Relationships are, in many instances, like joint bank accounts. The account holders can only withdraw what they’ve put in. And the more they put in, the more “compound interest” they can expect to reap! Contrary to common belief, our main responsibility in a relationship is to give. It’s always easy to question the other “joint account holder’s” behavior, but if we have the relationship at heart, we will seek to give first.

    #3 Choose Truthfulness
There’s always a fork in the road in any relationships. One side of the fork seems to commonly offer a wider and smoother path, whereas the other often looks narrower and bumpier. This comes in the form of an event or a situation when we have to choose between the plain truth or… a “twisted” one. As hard as it is to say, we should always choose the truth. When we do, not only does it display that we stand for our word, it also echoes our loyalty and our willingness to continue to give to the relationship.

The endless choices we now have in all areas of life, affect our perceptions. Perceptions like the new “flavor of the month” or the novelty, ought to be better than the “old” one… Or the sense that everything is disposable, because after all, I can always get a new upgraded version of what I have… It brings also the notion of “change,” that we have to look for change at all costs, because if we don’t, we may become obsolete or “passé.”

When it comes to our relationships, we seriously think that we have to be very cautious about the subtle effects of the “endless choices society” we live in. We think it’s time for all of us to make basic choices that will empower the relationships we cherish. The kind of choices that are not new, on the contrary, they are rooted, old fashioned choices, that define who we are, where we come from, and more importantly can remind the other person in the relationship, what we intend to continue to build upon.

Warnings, Sighs & Whispers: True Stories That Could Save Lives

Warnings, Sighs & Whispers: True Stories That Could Save Lives

This amazing collection of true stories reveals the drama that unfolds when lives are disrupted by a deadly disease. Drawn from all over the U.S., Canada, England and Australia, they provide a unique window into the doctor/patient relationship, which, at its best, is a paragon of empathetic communication. At its worst, it can lead to delays in diagnosis that adversely affect survival rates. The majority of ovarian and related cancers are not diagnosed until they have reached an advanced stage. Women may suffer symptoms for months, even years, before the true cause is recognized. They may be plied with prescriptions for anti-depressants, hormones, and fad diets, when they complain of physical pain. Often, they are told that they have an “irritable bowel” – a term with vague connotations of some kind of character defect. Wisely, the author allows each individual to speak in his or her own voice, thus humanizing the dry statistics and underlining the core of courage, indeed, the sheer heroism, that is required of ordinary people when serious illness strikes. Husbands, sons, and daughters have contributed especially poignant accounts. Asked to relive the most harrowing time of their lives, they wrote through tears. Some stories are tragic. Some will make you angry. But there are triumphs too, touches of humor, and much joy.

Bernie Sanders Could be a Thorn in the Side of President Hillary Clinton

After a divisive primary challenge, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) has taken to the campaign hustings urging voters to mark their election ballot for his former foe, Democratic Presidential nominee Hillary Clinton. Sanders tells voters Clinton is “the superior candidate” and that her Republican opponent, Donald Trump, is a “Pathological liar.”

Sanders is following the precedent of most candidates who lose their party’s Presidential nomination. It is commonplace for them to urge their supporters to support the party’s nominee.

However, if the nominee is elected, there is history of the vanquished primary rival becoming a thorn in his/her side.

Sanders became a tribune of the progressive left. With the formidable support of over 13 million Democratic primary voters, Sanders has the electoral bone fides to lead the charge against Clinton should she pivot to the center once in office. He could become her biggest critic should she pursue an interventionist foreign policy, support trade deals opposed by labor and environmental groups, or become an ally of the large financial institutions which helped to fund her campaign.

There is a history of defeated primary foes becoming critics of the President who beat them. In 1892, former President Grover Cleveland mustered the Democratic Presidential nomination by defeating a former ally, U.S. Senator David B. Hill (D-NY). In another political lifetime, Hill had been a ticketmate with Cleveland. Cleveland was Governor and Hill was Lieutenant Governor of New York. With Cleveland’s blessing, Hill was elected to succeed him.

However, the two developed irreconcilable differences, with Hill supporting bi-mettallism, where both gold and silver would be certified as legal tender, and economic nationalism, favoring a higher protective tariff. Contrariwise, Cleveland advocated hard money, supported the Gold Standard, and a lower protective tariff.

After losing the nomination, Hill got in line and endorsed his political friend turned foe. However, once Cleveland was elected, Senator Hill led the charge in blocking two of Cleveland’s nominees to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Four years later, the Republicans selected former Ohio Governor William McKinley for President. McKinley got his political revenge by defeating Thomas Bracket Reed of Maine for the nomination. When McKinley was in the House, Reed had upended him for the post of U.S. House Speaker. While Reed supported McKinley in the General Election, he became indignant at the President for his support of the Spanish American War. Reed, a non-interventionist on foreign policy, gave up his gavel in protest, resigning from the Speakership and his House seat in the middle of his term.

In another example, New York Governor Al Smith was once an ally of Franklin D. Roosevelt. In fact, in 1924, when the Republicans nominated Roosevelt’s cousin, Theodore Roosevelt Jr., to challenge Smith, Franklin was foursquare for Smith. That year, Roosevelt also nominated Smith for President at the Democratic National Convention, bestowing upon him the moniker: “The Happy Warrior.”

However the ambitions of both men collided in 1932 as Roosevelt vanquished Smith for the nomination. Being a good soldier, Smith campaigned for Roosevelt in the General Election, singing his praises in the critically important state of Massachusetts. Smith, a Catholic, was wildly popular with the state’s proliferating Catholic voting block.

However, Smith became a critic of Roosevelt. He came to see Roosevelt’s “New Deal” as too pervasive. Smith lambasted Roosevelt for pitting “class against class.” Smith even actively campaigned for Roosevelt’s Republican opponents in 1936, and again in 1940, Alf Landon and Wendell Willkie, respectively.

More recently, in 1976, the Democrats nominated former Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter, who was elected as an outsider to the Washington establishment and who branded himself as “untainted” by politics. On the heels of the Watergate imbroglio, voters were looking for someone from outside of the Beltway establishment. Thus Carter defeated the early frontrunner and structural candidate, U.S. Senator Henry “Scoop” Jackson (D-WA.), who was first elected to the U.S. Congress in 1940.

Jackson however was a party man through and through. Accordingly, he hit the campaign trail hard for Carter.

Yet once Carter was elected, Jackson was a frequent critic of his foreign policy. Jackson, who favored a hard line on Russia, was a cheerleader for the opposition to the Second Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty negotiated by Carter and the Russians. Jackson led the effort against Carter’s nomination of Paul Warnke as Arms Control Negotiator. Furthermore, in 1980, he endorsed Carter’s primary opponent, U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy (D-MA.)

Bill Clinton dealt with two former primary rivals who acted as good soldiers in endorsing him in the General Election. They then became critics during Clinton’s administration. One of these antagonists was former U.S. Senator Paul Tsongas (D-MA). Clinton and Tsongas exchange blows many times in the Democratic primary. Tsongas branded Clinton “unprincipled” and a “pander bear.” Moreover, he approved an advertisement which asserted, “Some people will say anything to be elected President.” Yet when Clinton secured the nomination, Tsongas heaped praise on Clinton, averring: “Bill Clinton is a healer by instinct and that skill will be critical as we come to understand the pulls and tugs of our multi-cultural society.” As for Tsongas’ earlier statement, he averred: “It was a campaign. Campaigns are tough. People make tough statements and I did, and others did as well.”

However, that praise was supplanted with condemnation when Clinton became President. Tsongas, a deficit hawk, believed that Clinton was spending too much money rather than promoting fiscal austerity. Tsongas told the New York Times that Clinton was a “direct threat to my children’s generation” and that Clinton’s “biggest problem is a lack of moral authority.” In 1994, Tsongas even floated the idea of forming a third party which would nominate General Colin Powell to challenge Clinton for re-election.

Another rival of Clinton was U.S. Senator Bob Kerrey (D-NE). During the primary sweepstakes, Kerrey, a Medal of Honor winner, questioned why Clinton did not serve in Vietnam, opining: “There is an apparent unwillingness to accept responsibility for a decision that was apparently based on conscience . . . I quibble with a decision that was premeditatively designed to further a political career, even then.” Kerrey also suggested Clinton “should not be the nominee of the party because he will not be able to win.”

Still, Kerrey put that behind him and campaigned for Clinton in the General Election. He was even a contender to become Clinton’s runningmate.

However, after Clinton became President, Kerrey called Clinton an usually good liar.” Kerrey said of Clinton: “There’s a tendency at times to play the victim-card a bit too much . . . It doesn’t trouble me; I get angry with it.” Kerrey and his Republican colleague John Danforth of Missouri promulgated a report calling for entitlement reform. However, Clinton rejected it. Kerrey even considered challenging Clinton for re-election, ultimately deciding against it.

Alternatively, some rivals have become allies of the President who defeated them. For example, in 1952 there was a bitter internecine feud between General Dwight D. Eisenhower and U.S. Senator Robert A. Taft (R-OH) for the GOP nomination. Eisenhower eked out a victory. However, that rivalry was set aside, as Taft, now the Senate Majority Leader, shepherded through Eisenhower’s legislative agenda his first year in office. The two former rivals even became social friends. However, Taft died just over half way into Eisenhower’s first year in office.

Similarly, in 1988, Vice President George H.W. Bush and U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole (R-KS) were embroiled in a political battle royale. At one point, the two candidates were on the air at the same time. Brokaw asked Bush if he had anything to say to Dole. Bush responded: “No, just wish him well and [we’ll] meet again in the South.” Brokaw then asked Dole if he had anything to say to Bush. Dole was inflamed by an advertisement the Bush campaign was running accusing him of “straddling on taxes.” Dole responded: “Yeah, tell him to stop lying about my record.”

However, Dole became Bush’s chief defender in the Senate and was instrumental in supporting Bush on foreign and domestic affairs.

In the present election, Bernie Sanders has gone from political obscurity to a cult figure in progressive circles. Should Hillary be elected President, Sanders will likely be a constant presence, urging her to pursue a progressive agenda. In fact, Sanders could become her chief antagonist should she govern as a centrist. He could also be her chief exponent should she act as a progressive Democrat.

Today there appears to be a rapprochement between Sanders and Clinton. Should Clinton be elected President, she will need the support of Sanders. Sanders will clearly be in the political catbird seat, and could be a thorn in the side of Clinton should she fail to give proper deference to progressive polices.

    I’m A Failure!

During my career in Academia, I have noticed an unhealthy trend among students. It’s not drinking or the latest designer drug, but it can be more harmful than both. The trend is the obsessively self-critical thinking that happens when students do something that doesn’t go “right”. They fall into the judgmental trap of thinking they are a failure or something is wrong with them.

We, as a society, are taught from an early age that being hard on ourselves is the only way to make things better… or make us better. We are taught that being self-critical is the driving factor for success.

There is a side effect to this kind of thinking. As students find out that they are not the best in class, or that the projects they created don’t receive the applause they think they deserve, many immediately turn to an obsessive, self-critical way of thinking. They bash themselves and judge themselves negatively. As a result, students become more stressed out, feel insecure, become depressed, and question their own self-worth. If not addressed early on, this kind of thinking can make the college experience a miserable time for any student.

There is a way to fix this kind of thinking, but few talk about it. One of the greatest keys to being successful in life and eliminating obsessive self-criticism is having Mindful Self-Compassion. Yep, that’s right. Compassion for your “self.”

Wait, what? Self-compassion? I know, it sounds somewhat odd to say out loud, but rarely do we consider showing ourselves kindness. We often show friends more caring and compassion than we show ourself. We’ve been trained to be self-critical and self-judgmental. Self-compassion goes against the natural order… or so many think. Some even think that if we are self-compassionate, we are being lazy and complacent.

But research has found that self-criticism only sabotages us and produces a variety of negative consequences. According to Kristin Neff, Ph.D., Associate Professor in human development at the University of Texas at Austin, self-criticism can lead to lowered self-esteem, anxiety and depression. Mindful self-compassion, on the other hand, can lead to greater understanding and peace of mind… and yes, personal and professional success.

So what is “Mindful Self-Compassion”? Actually, it’s quite simple. It can be broken down into three parts.

    1. Mindfulness: Mindfulness is about slowing your mind down to become aware of what you are thinking or doing in the present moment. It involves turning off your autopilot response and noticing what is going on, meaning that you pay attention to your thoughts and feelings without attaching any judgment to them.

Being mindful creates a distance between your thoughts or experiences and your reaction to them. It’s almost like observing your thoughts in the third person. You become aware of your thoughts and just notice what’s going on… you don’t sweep them under the rug and you don’t need to obsess about them either. You become aware, make a nonjudgmental note about the thought, (i.e. “There’s Mr. Negative again”.), tell yourself you’re okay, let the thought go, and return to the present moment.

Being mindful of self-critical thoughts will help you to be more objective about any emotions that may try to hitch a ride.

    2. Self-kindness: Accept that it is okay to be kind, gentle and understanding with yourself when you’re suffering.

It’s easy to be loving and kind to our friends. It’s time you do the same for yourself. If you mess up on a test, don’t beat yourself up. Think about why you did badly, then plan on studying more next time or find a tutor. People don’t think your project or assignment is the best? So what. You are learning, and making mistakes is part of that process. Take the criticism as tips on how to do better next time. Accept that you aren’t going to be perfect… no one is. Frankly, I don’t know anyone who is “perfect”… and those who think they are fall into the “ego-maniac” category. That’s not where you want to be.

    3. Common humanity: Recognize that you are not alone in the self-criticism struggle. We are all struggling. We often think we’re the only ones to make mistakes, feel rejected or fail. Guess what? We all have these experiences; it’s part of being human. We tend not to discuss our struggles, but if you share your experience with others, I bet you’ll find that they have felt the same way at some point. You are not alone. Talking about it may help to negate the power of negative self-talk and criticism.

I know… it’s easier said than done. When you are stuck in a self-criticism rut, try the following mindful self-compassion exercise:

    ▪ Sit somewhere quiet and pay attention to your breath going in and out of your nose or mouth. Notice how your breath feels as it enters and exits. Stay focused on this for a couple of minutes and then repeat to yourself, “May I be kind to myself, may I know that I am a good person, may I be at peace, may I know that all is well.” Do this for two or more minutes when you feel the negative thoughts creeping in.

This exercise will slow down your thoughts, help train your mind to let go of negative self-talk, and accept that you are okay. For more exercises on gaining mindful self-compassion for yourself, check out the meditations here:

A couple notes for the nay-sayers:

    1. Self-compassion is not self-pitying.
Self-pity is being obsessed and immersed in your own problems and forgetting that others struggle, too. Self-compassion is much different. Being self-compassionate is seeing things as they are –while not giving critical self-talk power. Self-compassion focuses on alleviating suffering while self-pity leaves you rolling in self-loathing.

    2. Self-criticism is not an effective motivator.
Challenging yourself, recognizing weaknesses and growing from them are productive. However, there’s actually nothing productive or motivating about criticizing yourself. When you criticize yourself you are creating fear of failure and you may wind up losing faith in yourself. Even if you do achieve great things, you’re often miserable because you live in a world of self-loathing and criticism. That doesn’t sound like a very happy world.

I wish you the best. Be kind to yourself!

5 Ways To Raise A Saver, Not A Spender

You may not have much influence over your kids’ athletic interests or their questionable fashion choices, but you just so happen to be in the perfect position to shape their money habits. Sure, kindergartners don’t need to know the ins and outs of loans and interest rates just yet, but at this age is the perfect time to instill a healthy outlook on saving that will last a lifetime.

Instilling strong financial values in your children will not only help them thrive as adults, it’s good for the economy they’ll eventually inherit. In June the Federal Reserve released alarming data that Americans owe more than $ 9.7 billion in revolving credit card debt, pointing to a widespread pattern of overspending;  it’s more important than ever to make sure your family doesn’t fall into the debt trap.

So how can you make sure your child is a saver rather than a spender? In partnership with the BuyPower Card from Capital One, we’re bringing you five smart ways to instill healthy financial habits in your children early on. When they have their own bills to pay, they just might look back and thank you.

Raising kids with smart financial habits will pay off big time over the years. The BuyPower Card from Capital One will pay off big time, too, by rewarding users with Earnings on every purchase. With no limit and no expiration, Earnings are redeemable towards a new Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac vehicle.

Stephen King Compares Donald Trump To Cthulhu; Cthulhu Issues Angry Denial

The ultimate “deplorable” wants nothing to do with Donald Trump.

A parody Twitter account set up for Cthulhu, one of the Great Old Ones created by early 20th century author H.P. Lovecraft, took offense to being linked to the Republican presidential candidate by novelist Stephen King:

But the Cthulhu account, which claims Cthulu is running for president, quickly fired off a denial ― and it was an absolute gem packed with references from King’s many books:

Now that this issue has been cleared up, is America finally #ReadyForCthulhu?

Is There A Solar System In The Mind’s Sky?

    2016-09-11-1473600796-6959847-solarsystem.jpg

Our understanding of the human mind, including where it came from, it’s true nature, and how it works and evolves, is primitive. In the absence of scientific understanding, the lexicons for mindfulness and meditation are rich with evocative metaphors. We search for perfect images or words to describe or evoke various experiences and brain states that free us even for a few moments from the messiness of being human. Now pop stars are calling us in cool ways to calm and clear our minds: “it’s all about the breath,” “feel this moment.”

In mindfulness practices we sit quietly and gently watch the passing inside weather. Thought clouds or windy surges of emotions rush in and pass by. Unhooking from the inner weather leads to experiencing the present moment. You may also get occasional glimpses of a stillness of being, resonating with the sky behind the clouds. Quantum biologists call this resting energy state, widely prevalent in biological molecules, “quantum criticality.” Daoists call it “Dao,” a pervasive stillness of the individual and collective consciousness.

While I cherish tuning into an empty state of mind, I have always felt a nagging dissatisfaction with letting thoughts and emotions go. I am curious about the nature of the thought clouds, windy emotions, and the ever-changing emotional weather report. Judy Collins captures my sentiments in her song Both Sides Now:

I‘ve looked at clouds from both sides now
From up and down and still somehow
    It’s cloud’s illusions I recall
I really don’t know clouds at all

A yearning to understand the inner clouds and windy emotions led me on a journey four years ago to “turn the lights on” in my inner world, starting with study of internal family systems (IFS) practice developed by Dick Schwartz. In the IFS model, which is focused on healing, the mindful mind, or “self,” witnesses and orchestrates an internal family of “parts” or subpersonalities that are the source of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, healthy and unhealthy.

As a biologist (17-year career in biotech), immersed in the awe-inspiring order of mother nature, I was certain that there is a strengths-based scaffolding for the internal family. Gradually I unpacked and organized my inner world. I found nine independent life forces or characters, now depicted as my personal emojis.

To convey this experience, I published a hypothesis paper: Coaching the Multiplicity of Mind: A Strengths-based Approach, followed by a new Harvard Health book, Organize Your Emotions, Optimize Your Life, co-authored with Harvard physician Eddie Phillips, and writer John Hanc. For four years I have done a daily roll call as my early morning mindfulness practice, which decodes my emotional weather report and brings some clarity and calm. I have taught the practice to hundreds of coaching clients, helping them tune into a “radio frequency” of each life force.

Now I use the metaphor of a solar system; I experience the psyche as having a sun at the core and eight planets, each in its own unique orbit. My mind seems like the energy field of a solar system. When I want to quiet my mind I ask my “planets” to go out to orbit, like sending kids out to play, so I can have a quiet moment. In Table 1, I list my five steps to decode and settle an agitated emotion.

In my flights of imagination, I wonder whether the solar system is the source of elements and energy forms and states that self-organized on earth into life forms, and four billion years later, populate our minds (Table 2).

Now we are back to a metaphor and a question: Is there a solar system in the mind’s sky?

Table 1: Five Steps to Decode and Settle an Agitated Emotion

    1. Imagine a large, benevolent outer space for the mind’s solar system.
    2. Move the mind’s planets out to orbit and sit in (sort of) still emptiness.
    3. Invite an agitated emotion into a still emptiness to share its message and emotional energy, and perhaps show its character in a costume or scene.
    4. Ask the agitated character to return to the mind’s outer space.
    5. Return to still emptiness. The just-in-time wisdom, previously eclipsed by the agitation, naturally emerges to balance and settle the agitation.

NOTE: This technique is aligned with a basic three-part algorithm of quantum biology (source: Stuart Kauffman) and Daoism (source: Wang Chengya, Beijing):

    + 0 –

Here’s the metaphor. When an emotional energy state (Plus or Yang, Negative or Yin) is in the presence of the Zero or Dao energy state, it seems to resonate with its polar opposite energy and cohere into a wave, a balance of opposing energies.

Table 2: Is there a Solar System in the Mind’s Sky?

I Never Understood Depression Until My Mother Died From It — In Honor Of World Suicide Prevention Day

Growing up with a depressed parent was normal. Does that make sense? I didn’t know any difference. I thought every parent cried themselves to sleep. That all mothers ended up in the psych ward at least 5 times a year. That most parents had addiction issues and thus slip ups happened every now and then. Because that was my normal. Depression was our family’s normal. We didn’t live by days of the week so much or special events; I measured time in the dark and light bouts of her illness

My normal was doctors and meds being prescribed to her; her lazy Susan of pills that sat upon our microwave. The AA and NAA meetings that I sat and coloured through as a child. My normal was a mother who sat in her room for hours and hours on end. Alone and weeping. Zero laughter. Very little excitement or enthusiasm for life. And almost no physical touch during the dark moments. Almost as if the zest of anything had been squeezed out with such violence that only a shadow of a person prepared meals and drove me places.

I thought everyone at 14 had mothers who cut their faces in a fit of rage within their depression. Then I visited my “best friend” and realized that wasn’t true. So I didn’t say anything. Because talking about it only deepened the realization that depression not only consumed our household; but stalked me in my mind. Always pretending things were better then they were. Never sharing the intensity behind the abuse that came with this mental illness. This illness that I despised. That I hated. It wouldn’t ever touch me.

So forgive me. I didn’t understand depression. I wanted to. I really did. It missed me in the the passing of genes and I’ve never experienced it myself. I have lived with it though. I’ve been a one woman audience to the chaos it brings. But the actual all knowing feeling isn’t something I am intimately in tune with. Just like I can’t comprehend not being able to take care of your children. Or cutting your wrists because the pain is so bad. Or requiring your child to parent you through another psych ward intake as you beg the doctors to admit her because you can’t do another night of suicide watch. It doesn’t make sense to me. And if that comes across critical please know that’s not the purpose. I genuinely cannot psychically fathom those feelings and emotions. I don’t think I ever will. But I have dug deep; done the first hand research of this disease. For most of my life I had zero empathy for my mother and her “issues.” Why couldn’t she snap out of it? Often in her darkest days I would scream and scream for her to figure herself out. Get her act together and move on. Why did it haunt her day in and out. It looked like such a weakness to me. Until the depression killed her and she committed suicide. And then something clicked.

I’m embarrassed to say for many years I judged. Full-on gavel in hand judged. And I am sorry. So sorry. Because I was without empathy. And THAT is the worst thing you can withhold from someone suffering. Maybe it was because I was so full of rage that even as an adult I struggled to have empathy for friends with depression. I always had sympathy; but never empathy. And that’s not the same at all. Brene Brown describes the difference as: “sympathy being the pity we feel for someone else’s hardships whereas empathy is the “me too”, the act of putting yourself in their shoes.” I cringe at the thoughts that once ran through my mind. How high on my horse I sat. Because in my head if I judged it, twisted it, or mocked it – the “it” didn’t have any weight, or value. Which meant they were just “sad”. And anyone can stop being sad.

Depression isn’t sad. It isn’t a sappy movie that triggers some tears or a really good cry. It’s not Adele on a rainy day with a glass of wine. It’s not the weepy feeling we get when our monthly cycle comes, or the tears we weep when miss our best friend.

It’s torture. Absolute pure and utter torture. And I am not using that word lightly at all. It attacks the brain in ways in which those of us who aren’t struggling can’t imagine; and then we expect you to snap out of it and make dinner. As if you have any control over this all encompassing pain that you can’t shake off. It enters your soul and refuses to leave. Or allow you to get out of bed. Or pick up your crying child, or have a shower.

Imagine an open sore. On your arm or leg. One that was cut long ago. It oozes and weeps through whatever bandage you place on it. Sometimes the pain is more then you can handle and you just have to lay there, while other times you can still move but only in a fog because the throbbing is still there. It’s always there. And yet you carry on. You try to wake up, get dressed and smile. Mostly pretending. Always pretending. That is depression. The sore that may scab, hopefully scar; but always there.

Here’s what I know to be true now. About my mother who suffered and about my friends who are suffering. They aren’t sad. It’s not just a rainy cloud day. And I’m sorry I ever thought that. I’m sorry if I ever pushed you to “just smile” I wish now I hadn’t pushed so hard with my mother; as a child I didn’t comprehend it but as an adult I think she could have used some empathy. Some “me too” in my words and actions.

So as National Suicide Prevention week begins I’m humbled. Humbled to be able to walk alongside my friends who are suffering and honoured that they would willingly share their story and allow me to love them where they are at. So if your struggling and crying out for help; let me hold your hand.

If you or someone you know needs help, call 1-800-273-8255 for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. Outside of the U.S., please visit the International Association for Suicide Prevention for a database of resources.

Hillary Clinton: Half Of Trump Supporters Belong In ‘Basket Of Deplorables’

NEW YORK – Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton said on Friday that half the supporters of her Republican rival Donald Trump belonged in a “basket of deplorables” of people who were racist, homophobic, sexist, xenophobic, or Islamophobic.

Speaking at an evening fundraiser in New York, the former U.S. secretary of state said Trump had given voice to hateful rhetoric from such individuals through his behavior as a candidate for the White House.

“To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the ‘basket of deplorables,’” Clinton said. “Unfortunately there are people like that. And he has lifted them up.”

Some of those people were irredeemable, she said, but they did not represent America.

The other basket of Trump’s supporters constituted individuals desperate for change who felt let down by the government and the economy, Clinton added.

“They don’t buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different,” Clinton said. “Those are people we have to understand and empathize with, as well.”

Clinton’s comments drew a rebuke from Kellyanne Conway, the campaign manager of the Republican nominee, who said in a message on social media network Twitter that Clinton had insulted millions of Americans.

Many of Clinton’s fundraisers have been closed to the media, but her Friday remarks, preceding a performance by singer Barbra Streisand, were open to journalists.

“What’s truly deplorable isn’t just that Hillary Clinton made an inexcusable mistake in front of wealthy donors and reporters happened to be around to catch it, it’s that Clinton revealed just how little she thinks of the hard-working men and women of America,” Trump senior communications adviser Jason Miller said in a statement.

Clinton spokesman Nick Merrill noted a previous speech in which she accused Trump of embracing a brand of U.S. political conservatism associated with white nationalism and nativism known as the “alt right” movement.

“Obviously not everyone supporting Trump is part of the alt right, but alt right leaders are with Trump,” Merrill said on Twitter. “And their supporters appear to make up half his crowd, when you observe the tone of his events.”

Clinton’s comments were followed by a concert by Streisand, who performed a version of the Stephen Sondheim song “Send in the Clowns” that parodied the New York businessman.

(Reporting by Jeff Mason; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)

Editor’s note: Donald Trump regularly incites political violence and is a serial liar, rampant xenophobe, racist, misogynist and birther who has repeatedly pledged to ban all Muslims — 1.6 billion members of an entire religion — from entering the U.S.

21 Spirit Lifters To Help You Get Back On Track To Living Your Highest Path

During our life journey, we will at some point (or many points) find ourselves in a funk and forget about the lighter side of life. Life’s bumps are hard to escape because they are a normal part of a life well-loved.

Our storms often bring as much value to our life journey as our highlights and happy moments. When life upsets and challenges bring us down, we can use these experiences as opportunities to transform and learn something new about life. We can use our experiences to see life through new eyes.

When we feel ready to move through rough patches, it can be tricky to navigate our way back to level ground. It can be challenging to remember how to feel light and content in life. Sometimes it’s helpful to have a guide to find our way back to loving the lives we are in.

These 21 spirit lifters, are practices I go to when I need some extra help to get back on track to living on my highest path. If any feel right for you, give them a try.

    1) Breathe
Intentional breathing is a powerful way to quiet mind chatter and step into the present moment. When I get caught up in the story that life is hard, I have learned the best thing to do is give myself permission to put the story on hold and focus on my deep intentional breathing. A useful practice is to take a full breath in and slowly release the tension and story you may be holding on to. Repeat as often as necessary to help bring more ease into tense moments.

    2) Move
When we are engaged in physical activities, we give our minds a break and our health a boost. Moving our bodies helps us release stagnation and instead feel a rush of feel-good endorphins The very act of moving can help us remember everything in life is fluid, nothing is permanent. Whatever stress or challenge we may go through, it will eventually pass. For more inspiration, read 5 Easy Tips to Add More Movement in Your Day.

    3) Connect With Nature
Life is like a dream and nature is the extraordinary backdrop transforming the dream into a beautiful miracle. No matter where we live in the world, we are surrounded with natural beauty we can experience on a deep soul level. Step outside, notice the sound of the wind and the warmth of the sun on your skin. Feel the rain dampen your clothes and watch the cool brisk air transform your breath before your eyes. Start to truly experience the incredible sights and sounds before you, and pay attention to your physical response. Connecting with nature awakens the spirit of who we are. Nature helps us come back to the part of us that sometimes gets buried in the noise of life.

    4) Give Thanks

There is always something to be thankful for. When we put our attention on what we are grateful for, we begin to notice more reasons and evidence why life is a gift to be enjoyed. Gratitude rituals are powerful and they can be implemented at any time throughout the day. Being thankful gives us hope by helping us remember there is a brighter side to life. For more tips on gratitude, check out 7 Ways Gratitude Brightens Our View.

    5) Acts of Kindness
It is uplifting to genuinely give to others without expectation or strings attached. The act of giving is often where the true gift resides. Offering others our kindness, helps us move our focus away from our worries and dramas, and instead connect to our inner spirit. When we authentically give our love and light to others, we are in essence being in our love and light.

    6) Dream
As humans we get to use our imaginations to create, envision and dream. There is a real sense of hope and vitality that comes along with giving ourselves permission to dream big dreams. When we were children, it was second nature to dream and to intuitively believe in our creative potential. We haven’t lost our power to dream, sometimes we just need a gentle reminder it is okay to spend time creating new visions for our lives. Take a break from worries, and enjoy how it feels to be hopeful and excited about new possibilities. For more inspiration, check out 7 Simple Strategies To Transform Your Invisible Dreams And Goals Into Reality.

    7) Be Mindful With Words

Our words are powerful, especially when spoken aloud. The words we give life to can spread like wildfire. What we say may be used to enrich our lives and the lives of others. Our words can also be hurtful and may cause suffering. When I get caught in a pattern of judging others or feeling bad about myself, I have found it helpful to pay attention to my inner dialogue and words I am speaking aloud. Often placing our attention on the tone of our words is all it takes to set a new intention of speaking kindly to ourselves and others. It is also helpful to give ourselves permission to say less words and have fun noticing how it feels to be more mindful with how we speak.

    8) Sleep
There is a lot to be said for getting adequate sleep on a regular basis. In this driven society, many of us push our limits and then don’t take care to recharge. It is no wonder we can get stuck in a rut or feel depleted. Sleep deprivation is dreadful. Sometimes a solid night’s sleep is exactly what we need to hit the restart button and see life from a fresh perspective. Arianna Huffington’s newest book, The Sleep Revolution: Transforming Your Life, One Night at a Time is a wonderful resource to inspire us to change the way we view our relationship with sleep.

    9) Undo
When we get swept up in the endless act of doing, it can be hard to remember how to feel light. When we give ourselves permission to ‘simply be’, we make space to notice the miracles around us. When we slow down, we can savor the moments before us and appreciate life for the gift that it is. For more inspiration, read: Why We Should Spend More Time Being and Less Time Doing.

    10) Spontaneity
Sometimes we can get so caught up in regiment, routine and structure that life feels dull and predictable. Sometimes what we really need is a reminder to step outside of our comfort zone and add more zest and excitement to our lives. There are many ways we can be spontaneous. The idea is to follow our heart and take a chance every now and again for the sake of taking a chance.

    11) Dress Up
Dressing up can be more about giving ourselves a gift, than about striving to impress others. Our style is a creative expression of who we are, and we can use it as a way to lift our spirits. When I want to feel good on a special occasion or give myself a boost on a gloomy day, I love to paint my nails a bright color or style my hair. Putting some care and attention into our physical appearance feels good. Dressing the part can help us feel confident and comfortable to be who we are.

    12) Be Open to Receive
How easy is it for you to receive? For many people (myself included) it can be way more comfortable to give than to receive. Living life with a generous spirit feels good, and it can brighten the path for others too. In this light, it may seem as though the more we give, the better we will feel. This is not necessarily the case. Givers, especially ‘serial givers’, often end up feeling depleted by not balancing the energy they give out, with allowing it back in. When we open up to the idea of giving AND receiving, we allow more peace and balance in our lives.

    13) Get Creative

We all have the capacity to create. It usually boils down to our belief in whether or not we think we are creative. When we tap into our creative energy, we are in essence connecting deeper to our inner spirit. There are many creative endeavors we can enjoy. Activities such as: cooking, building, gardening, storytelling, photography, painting, and writing are just some of the ways we can engage our creative senses. Elizabeth Gilbert’s book, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear, is a fantastic read and intriguing way to view how we can openly dance with our creative senses.

    14) Celebrate
How often do you take time to celebrate where you are in your life at this very moment? Sometimes we travel through life quickly while we chase one moving target after the other. We can forget to take time to celebrate how far we have come. Giving ourselves the gift of celebratory time not only feels good, it can have a way of putting life in perspective. There are many ways we can celebrate: with friends and loved ones, enjoying a special ritual, or giving ourselves a well-deserved pat on the back for being amazing exactly as we are.

    15) Connect
As human beings, we thrive when we connect with the people we are surrounded by. We also receive a sense of peace and clarity when we regularly listen in and make it a priority to have a strong connection with our inner selves. When we are truly connected to who we are, we lead our lives from this truth. From this place, we do not need to seek and search for truths outside of ourselves to feel okay – we know we are okay. When we don’t have an agenda in our interactions, we receive the full benefits of being present and open to witnessing who people really are. Our interactions can help us see how similar and connected we all are.

    16) Adventure
When was the last time you went on an adventure? Being adventurous doesn’t always mean traveling the world, climbing mountains or white water rafting. While these kinds of adventures are exciting and definitely lead to a life well-lived, they aren’t always accessible in our daily lives. Adopting an adventurous mindset is something we can do anytime, no matter where we are. We can choose to enjoy more fun and excitement without packing our bags and leaving home. We can add an adventurous spin on the activities and hobbies we love to do. Each day we wake up, we receive another chance to have a unique experience we will never exactly replicate again.

    17) Read
There are many gifted writers in the world whose purpose and passion is to entertain, inspire and add to the lives of others. When we are in a funk, it can be helpful to pick up a favorite book and become swept away in story. The art of language and the creative power of human imagination has created countless masterpieces for us to enjoy. Reading is a gift we can turn to when we want to learn, be entertained or escape to a safe space that engages our imagination and senses.

    18) Laughter
Laughter truly is the best medicine. We can immerse ourselves in laughter during happy times and in times of distress. Some of my fondest memories are of deep rooted belly laughs shared with good friends. Many of those shared laughs happened during heightened times of upset. Laughter can be used to pull us out of the doldrums and to help make our spirits bright. We can also use laughter to connect back to our passion for living fully, and to experience the many joys and amazing things about life. For more inspiration, read How to Tap Into Your Joy.

    19) Honor Your Boundaries
Each of us is in charge of our own personal boundaries. We teach other people how to treat us. If we feel like we are doormats and our boundaries aren’t being respected, it is because we need to honor ourselves first. It can be wildly uncomfortable to sit in the uneasiness of holding a boundary with others who overstep. Sometimes it feels easier to give in and be the people pleaser. But turning our back on ourselves always comes with a price. The more we honor ourselves, the easier our interactions become and the more settled we feel. For more inspiration, read How to Stand in Your Power, and Stop Giving it Away.

    20) Be Curious
We are all explorers on this great life adventure. We get to create our own life story and make sense of the world in our unique way. In childhood, we asked endless questions because we were thirsty to know about all things in life. As adults we can lose our passion for learning and discovering new things about life. One way to open up to be students again, is to ask questions and be curious. We can remind ourselves we aren’t meant to have it all figured out, we are meant to be having the adventure of a lifetime. For more inspiration, read 11 Powerful Tips to Keep Your Spirits Bright.

    21) Be Gentle
Life can throw us curve balls and we don’t always bounce back the same way. There is no right way to do life. We don’t all have to be on a quest to learn and grow either. Sometimes what we really need is to give ourselves permission to be exactly where we are – whether that is in a place of pure bliss or in the depths of despair. Our highest path doesn’t mean we have to always wear a giant smile and have life figured out. Our highest path is being okay with who we are, exactly as we are.

No matter where we are on our life journey, the greatest gift and spirit booster we can give ourselves, is to love who we are and be gentle with our human selves.

Dodge Darts, Fila Sweaters and Suicide: The Danger of Facades

    2016-09-09-1473458330-226319-ScreenShot20160909at12.39.07PM.png

When I was ten, I once sobbed for three straight days. No relative had died. I hadn’t been bullied for wearing unbearably tight tennis shorts (not this time). And no, Welcome Back Kotter hadn’t been cancelled. It was a sad event, not a wholesale national tragedy.

In 1976, my parents sold their ’71 Dodge Dart for a new Mercedes, to go along with their Cadillac. And I couldn’t stop crying. So much so that I even missed Hebrew School- so it wasn’t all bad. Mind you, I was a sensitive boy who’s crying jags could be triggered by everything from a botched haircut to Cindy Brady asking Santa to restore Carol’s voice for Christmas.

What I remember from that time, 40 years hence, was being acutely aware that part of my youth was going away. See, I was an unremitting nostalgist long before I began posting lists of 90’s songs on Facebook. But what I really intuited was a shift, maybe of values. It seemed like the final transition from our more modest life in the flats of Van Nuys to a posher existence in the Jewish Alps of Encino. And even then, with only my gut and intense sensitivity to guide me, I sensed a hollowness in the striving. So much so that my parents remember me finally blurting out the reason I was so upset. Sounding like a ten year-old mini-Marxist, I apparently yelled “It’s because you’re selling out!’

You may be wondering what my disproportionately emotional response to unloading a domestic sedan has to do with National Suicide Prevention Week. Even after typing 3 drafts, my fingertips were asking the same question. And it’s true, this piece has a more esoteric, roundabout thesis than my usual “Don’t eat onion rings after midnight.” Or “My daughter’s going to college. Me, sad.”

What I think this is about is the immense power we give to projecting success to the world. It’s about the need to signal, especially in the social media era, mental well-being, even when it’s not the case. It’s about presenting the world a façade of contentment instead of asking for help. That’s what my Dad did. Right up until he took his own life.

Now I am not claiming to have possessed the predictive powers of a boy Nostradamus or a kid Nate Silver. Nor was I a child with a novelist’s ability to see the grand scope of my family’s saga while it was happening. No, I couldn’t extrapolate all of this from selling a car. But I did intuit that things were changing and I didn’t like them. Either that, or my tennis shorts were too tight.

In a million years, I’d never have predicted this story ending in my father’s suicide. Not my Dad, who until the minute it happened, I had considered the happiest person I knew. To this day, I half-assume my waking hours without him are the bad dream. And the ubiquitous dream where he’s still with us is the real life.

I have never cared about labels, as a kid or today. At 50, my wardrobe consists of one pair of jeans, one pair or Vans and a rotating collection of identical black pocket t-shirts. It’s not a punk rock fashion statement, per se. But I do look like I’m dressed from the Henry Rollins mail-order catalogue. I don’t care about designer suits or designer glasses or designer watches. Plus my utilitarian fashion philosophy is aided by the fact that I couldn’t afford them even if I did care.

Sure, I wanted Quicksilver chord shorts instead of OPs. I said I was anti-materialistic, not a farmer. My mother took great pride in trying to dress my brothers and I in various Fila tennis sweaters and sweat jackets. Now, I wouldn’t mind wearing those ironically at a Wes Anderson costume party. But at the time, I felt like an imposter. Especially because I rooted for everyone but Bjorn Borg, while still secretly wishing I had his hair and headband.

In every aspect of life, I witness parents placing inordinate value on labels, never more so than in elite private schools. The power of labels is why parents knowingly send their kids to insane high schools that destroy their kids’spirits and self-esteem, just so they can brag about it at Soul Cycle and throw a sticker on the back of their Tesla. It’s why someone (me) would stay at an elite school where the wealthiest Gentile boys formed a group called the Sons of Hitler and drew swastikas on the lockers of Jewish seventh graders. Yet, transferring was never an option. Such is the power of a label.

The truth is, we all project facades. We present to the world, through Facebook, happier marriages, better kids, more satisfying jobs and fuller bank accounts than we actually have. I’m not trying to present myself as some holier-than-thou gag writing Dali Lama.

In fact, instances of my colossal hypocrisy abound. I think we can all agree there is no group of people more smug in their zealotry than college freshmen home for their first winter break. Imagine how annoyed my parents must have been with my intro-course socialism, ranting against the capitalist system, quoting Marcuse and C. Wright Mills, all the while eating prime rib at a fancy Maui steakhouse. Or, the time as a temp at Rocketdyne I refused to file any paperwork relating to the military-industrial complex. Where did I think I was working? The place had ‘rocket” in its name!

Even as I decry how beholden we are to labels, I wonder about the damage my own prestige obsessions have caused. When I allow myself to fall into a guilt spiral, I think about my insistence on going to Brown over a UC. And the youthful shit fit I threw over not wanting to transfer even when my parents first encountered money problems my junior year. Did my adherence to the Ivy League “label” incur debts my dad was never able to escape? My guess is that the two are unrelated. But these are the kinds of questions your brain asks as you forever ponder the unanswerable questions regarding the suicide of a parent.

    2016-09-09-1473458385-7752691-ScreenShot20160909at12.35.15PM.png

Every generation creates its own facades to signify “making it.” It’s why we’d wear Knights of the Round Table collared shirts from Marshall’s to fool the near-sighted kids in middle school into thinking they were genuine Polo. It why somebody generations ago changed the pronunciation of my last from “Bay-har” to “Bee-har”, presumably to sound less Istanbul and more ‘Merican.

I will never understand the pressure my father must have been under as an immigrant’s son to show he had made it, to signal that he was no longer the Sephardic kid from Boyle Heights who swept up at a drugstore to pay his way through UCLA. I don’t know. And I’ll never know. I can only surmise that the pressure he placed on himself to indicate he’d made it was too immense. And the shame in admitting weakness or asking for help was too great. Thus, for a long time, he created a façade. It was not an accurate reflection of either his financial wherewithal or his inner life. That to me is the great tragedy of this and most suicides. When someone who is loved by all feels they can turn to no one. When the compulsion to keep up appearances outweighs everything else.

You just wish he were here so you could say, we never needed the fancy school or the country clubs or the house on the Westside. None of that ultimately mattered. I’d be a lot happier with a Dad and maybe a ’71 Dodge Dart.

    The Latest Hillary Conspiracy Theory

Wednesday night presidential candidates Hillary Clinton and Donald J. Trump participated in a “Commander-in-Chief” forum on NBC. The two contenders appeared separately, but not equally. The night belonged to Clinton. Of course she had an unfair advantage. She knew stuff.

Trump loves to blame others for anything that doesn’t go his way, including the “scum” media, the “unfair” “Mexican” judge presiding over the Trump University litigation, and the “rigged” election process orchestrated by “Crooked Hillary.”

Proving the old cliché about apples not falling far from the tree, Donald Trump Jr. tweeted on Thursday, “Was Hillary Wearing an Earpiece During Last Night’s Presidential Forum? http://www.infowars.com/was-hillary-wearing-an-earpiece-during-last-nights-presidential-forum/ … via @realalexjones”

The Infowars.com website Trump Jr. cited floated this asinine story that has been widely debunked. Video confirms no such device was utilized. The Los Angeles Times reports that “Infowars is run by radio host Alex Jones, a controversial figure who espouses fringe conspiracies, including that the 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a hoax.” And a report on AOL News states that “Some of Jones’ more outlandish claims include that the Obama administration has allowed Pepsi to use aborted fetal tissue in its soft drinks, and that the shooting at Sandy Hook was really a hoax.”

Of course, anyone with a lick of common sense would understand the silliness of this earpiece allegation. At the threshold, if she were going to wear a device to get electronic help with her answers, she certainly would have worn her hair over her ear to hide it! Even a phony carnival mentalist would know to conceal such a gimmick.

However, I do understand why the Trump camp would think that Hillary was getting electronic help with her responses. They simply could not accept that someone could be so knowledgeable, intelligent, and articulate without a team of hidden assistants secretly feeding her information. Trump’s own dismal performance at the forum only magnified the difference in the skill sets between the two candidates.

There was no earpiece in Hillary’s ear. I did, however, see a foot in Trump’s mouth.

The Idea That Legalizing Pot Will Drive Kids To Get High Just Went Up In Smoke

The abuse of marijuana by American youth has declined in recent years, even as adults’ embrace of the plant has continued to grow, according to a recent federal study.

The findings also suggest that the movement toward legalization and decriminalization of the plant in multiple states hasn’t necessarily increased young people’s access to marijuana.

The study, released last week by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, examines marijuana use among Americans 12 and older between 2002 and 2014. It concludes that while more adults in general are using marijuana, the percentage of teens using or abusing marijuana, or who are dependent on the drug, has actually decreased.

The 12-year period covered in the study was one in which more than a dozen states rejected prohibition in favor of legalization of marijuana for medical or recreational purposes. Now, about half the states in the U.S. have legalized some form of marijuana, and several more are considering doing so this year.

Marijuana is the most commonly used illicit substance in the United States. In 2013, about 20 million people reported having used the substance in the past month, according to the CDC. In 2015, about 47 percent of U.S. adults admitted to using marijuana during their lifetime.

As use rates are up, one might expect that abuse and dependency rates would follow. Certainly that’s what opponents of marijuana policy reform have warned would happen as the legalization movement forges ahead. But that’s not what the CDC found, especially among young people.

With marijuana use more common among more Americans, it should come as no surprise that the CDC found past-month use was up 35 percent since 2002 among people aged 12 and over. In 2002, that figure was 6.2 percent; in 2014, it had risen to 8.4 percent. But, notably, rates of use were up among all age groups except teens aged 12-17, a group whose usage rates saw no significant increases or decreases in 2014, according to the CDC.

Moreover, daily or almost daily marijuana use was up significantly for most Americans, rising from 2 percent in 2002 to 3.5 percent by 2014. But, again, researchers found the opposite trend among 12- to 17-year-olds. Daily or almost daily marijuana use among teens dropped from 2.4 percent in 2002 to 1.6 percent by 2014.

Overall, the study found that marijuana abuse and dependency had fallen significantly among people who’d used marijuana in the past year. In 2014, about 12 percent of Americans who’d used marijuana in the past year were found to be abusing or dependent on the substance. That’s down almost 30 percent from 2002, when nearly 17 percent of past-year marijuana users were abusing or dependent. Teens between the ages of 12 and 17 and youths 18-25 who’d used marijuana during the past year saw the largest decreases in abuse and dependency, falling 24 percent by 2014.

For all Americans, rates of marijuana dependency and abuse also fell. In 2002, 1.8 percent of Americans aged 12 and older satisfied the clinical criteria for abuse of or dependency on marijuana. By 2014, that number dropped to 1.6 percent. And again, youth aged 12-17 saw the sharpest decline during that period ― from 4.3 percent in 2002 to 2.7 by 2014, a shift of 37 percent. Young adults aged 18-25 also saw a significant decline (18 percent) in abuse/dependency rates during the same period.

Somewhat oddly, the CDC found that while use and abuse of marijuana among U.S. youth has declined, the perception among youth that there is “great risk” in smoking marijuana has also declined. Further, the perception of there being “no risk” in using marijuana once or twice a week has increased, the CDC found. Yet despite the apparent softening in young people’s attitudes toward marijuana use, the CDC says that since 2002, the perceived availability of marijuana among youth age 12-17 and 18-25 has also decreased nationally. In other words, American youth may believe that marijuana is less harmful than they once did, but they also believe it’s harder to obtain.

The CDC data on decline in teen use of marijuana dovetails with findings from another recent large national survey on U.S. drug use, the Monitoring the Future Survey. That review found that while more adults are smoking pot, teens are not ― though again, teens also report that they don’t see great harm in using marijuana. Those researchers were also perplexed by these results.

So what’s going on here? The CDC isn’t entirely certain. As far as accessibility, it argues that perhaps the various changes in state marijuana laws, and how those changes have affected young people’s access to the plant, may need more time to show up in the data. Regarding abuse and dependence rates dropping, the CDC suggests that changes in state law may be a contributing factor.

“With changes in medical marijuana laws and, in particular, state laws or policies allowing limited access to low percentages of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) or cannabidiol (CBD), persons who use marijuana daily for medical reasons might be using strains that pose lower risk for dependence or abuse,” the CDC wrote.

Diane Goldstein, a retired police lieutenant commander who now serves on the board of the drug reform group Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, told The Huffington Post that the study’s findings highlight the ineffectiveness of law enforcement efforts against substance use. They also, she said, highlight the potential good that could come of legal regulation.

It’s not clear whether it’s actually any harder for teens to get marijuana now than it used to be, Goldstein said. But just the fact that teens think it’s more difficult might be evidence that “bringing the illicit market above ground minimizes access to children.”

The CDC data is drawn from almost 900,000 people who responded to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health between 2002 and 2014. Respondents were considered to be abusing marijuana if they experienced “problems at work, home, and school; problems with family or friends; physical danger; and trouble with the law” because of their marijuana use.

They were considered to be dependent on the substance if they experienced “health and emotional problems associated with substance use, unsuccessful attempts to reduce use, tolerance, withdrawal, reducing other activities to use substances, spending a lot of time engaging in activities related to substance use, or using the substance in greater quantities or for a longer time than intended.”

Abuse and dependence was measured in accordance with the standards set by the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.
